It has been notoriously difficult to catch the perpetrator who is infringing your copyright and bring a successful suit against him, bearing in mind that information on web sites are accessible from all over the world. Text, music and video intellectual property has been pirated. The recent problems of the popular music web site Napster illustrates the copyright rules.
Napster
Napster offered a facility whereby users could upload music they had onto the site in MP3 form. This could subsequently be downloaded by other users for free. It was undoubtedly costing the music industry millions. It was a large step up from illegally taping music off the radio as the quality is that of a CD.
Finally one music group Metallica took one Internet Service Provider to court in order to identify the users who had been downloading their music. The names of these many were eventually released and actions were pursued against them. A move which was not to make Metallica popular with these particular fans. But the result of this case will be to ban Napster completely if the result is upheld on appeal. It follows that all copyrighted creations are offered the same protections online.
Over Here
The UK is no different, thus anyone wishing to put copyright material on the Internet, or further distribute or download such material that others have placed on the Internet, should ensure that they have the permission of the owners of rights in the material. If you post copyright information online then protecting it may be achieved by marketing the copyrighted material with copyright symbol and accompanying text that will draw the users attention to the fact that is protected
Accompanying contract details of the author would also be helpful in obtaining permission for the reuse of the information, or set limitations to which you allow the reuse of this material. The name of the copyright owner and the year of publication may also be helpful.
