Asbestos is a natural mineral, mined from rock found in many countries.  It is made up of tiny fibres that are as strong as steel but can be woven like cotton and are highly resistant to heat and chemicals.

Asbestos was widely used as a building, insulation and heat protection material from the 1950's to mid 1980's in Great Britain.  It was used in a range of industries for piping, boilers, flooring, mattresses, cement and drainage.  Cutting, drilling, filing, sawing, sanding, grinding and handling of asbestos materials gave riseto asbestos dust.

When asbestos is disturbed or damaged, it releases tiny fibres that can be inhaled into the lungs.  This can cause inflammation, a build-up of scar tissue (fibrosis) and sometimes cancer.

Workers were exposed to varying quantities of asbestos dust.  They were not provided with respiratory equipment nor were they given warnings as to the health risks associated with their work. Similarly in many cases, no precautionary measures were taken and no protective equipment was provided.

Workers that were provided with protective clothing were in some instances given overalls made of asbestos cloth.  There have been incidences where family members complained of asbestos-type illnesses following the handling of overalls which were made out of asbestos.

If you were exposed to asbestos and suffer from an illness as result, you may be entitled to compensation. It is also possible that you may be entitled to compensation from USA through one of the various bankruptcy trusts set up there to deal with claims arising out of asbestos exposure through certain asbestos products many of which were used here in Northern Ireland in many industrial settings. Wilson Nesbitt will investigate all of the options.

Should you wish to obtain an impartial and obligation free opinion on your claim then please contact either one of our experienced team members profiled on the right of this web page, telephone 0800 316 0696 or email litigation@wilson-nesbitt.com.
