Survey suggests only divorce is more stressful than buying a property

By Lauren Burns

A new survey suggests that buying or selling a property is one of the most stressful experiences adults in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK will go through, second only to divorce.

The survey by Which? Mortgage Advisers asked 2,000 people asked people who had bought or sold a property in the last 5 years whether they found the transaction stressful, and asked them to name any other experience they had found particularly difficult. Going through a divorce was cited by 78 per cent of those polled as a stressful life event. Selling a property appears to be marginally more stressful than buying a house, mentioned by 70 per cent and 69 per cent of those polled respectively. The top ten stressful life experiences were as follows:

78% - Going through a divorce
70% - Selling a house
69% - Buying a house
68% - Arranging care for an elderly relative
53% - Having a child
49% - Changing jobs
40% - Getting married
36% - Finding a school for your child
22% - Retiring from work
17% - Buying a new car
