End of month deadline for self assessment returns

People in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK that file paper self-assessment tax returns have just over a week to avoid large fines.

Approximately 20% of self-assessment returns are filed on paper, meaning around 2 million people in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK have until 31st October to submit their returns. Missing the deadline will incur taxpayers a £100 fine, regardless of whether or not they have any tax to pay. Interest charges will also accumulate if tax owed is not paid on time.

However, anyone missing the paper deadline would still have an additional three months to submit an online return - the deadline for those is 31st January 2013. Anyone who has not submitted their self-assessment return online before has to register on the HMRC website to obtain a user identification code.
