Fewer and smaller inheritances to be left

One in three people living in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK will probably not receive any kind of inheritance, and for those that will, the average inheritance is estimated to be around £45,000.

A survey by Nationwide Building Society found that 50% of those questioned haven't considered how they will provide for their family in the event of their death. Research from Baring Asset Management revealed that 29% of people are relying on an inheritance to fund their retirement.

However, relying on an inheritance from parents is no longer a reality for many people in the UK, as the cost of retirement increases - not to mention the number of people severely affected by falling house values in Northern Ireland.
