Grants for NI homeowners to upgrade heating

Northern Ireland homeowners can apply for a grant of up to £1000 to replace old inefficient boilers.

The Northern Ireland Executive has pledged £12million in grants to help property owners upgrade from old boilers to oil or gas heating, or even a wood pellet boiler. To qualify for a grant homeowners must earn less than £40,000 a year and have a non-condensing boiler that is at least 15 years old.

The scheme was piloted last year and saw 1,700 houses make a switch to a condensing boiler system with an estimated 30% increase in fuel efficiency. A further 16,000 homes are expected to benefit from the grant scheme. Minister for social development, Nelson McCausland, commented that the scheme is hoped to address fuel poverty in Northern Ireland, which is the highest of any region in the UK, as householders spend "more of their disposable income on energy costs".
