New digital services launched for Self Assessment taxpayers

Three new pilot digital services are to be launched by HMRC with the aim of helping taxpayers in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK manage their tax affairs more easily.

These three new pilot digital services which will be launched in February 2014 are `Digital Self Assessment’ where taxpayers can receive e-mail alerts and view online messages from HMRC, `PAYE for Employees’ where taxpayers can inform HMRC online of any changes which might affect their tax code; and `Your Tax Account’ which amalgamates all the information businesses need to manage their tax affairs such as viewing payments dates, making payment, viewing due dates for submission and filing tax return forms.

Liam Coulter head of tax at Wilson Nesbitt Solicitors commented “HMRC are using technology more and more to try and provide taxpayers with additional information so that they comply fully with their tax obligations which can only be a good thing. However it remains to be seen if HMRC will ultimately reduce staff numbers in contact centres which may increase call waiting times for those who need to contact HMRC with other issues”.
