HMRC reclaims record amount in unpaid taxes

Almost £3.65 million of unpaid tax has been recovered from taxpayers in Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK by HMRC as a direct result of avoidance schemes, evasion and fraud, according to recent reports.

HMRC’s specialist investigations team recovered £3.65bn in 2013/14, up by almost 25 per cent on the £2.97bn in 2012/13, making it its best haul to date.

Wilson Nesbitt Solicitors head of tax Liam Coulter commented:

"These figures show that HMRC’s increasingly proactive approach to collecting tax from evasion and fraud is paying off. HMRC have been recruiting heavily for its specialist investigations team and now have even more resources to track down those it suspects of unfairly avoiding their fair share of tax. Anyone who is in this position should come forward as soon as possible to avail of lower penalty rates.”
